How to Get Paid Faster as a Contractor: 7 Ways That Actually Work

The work is done, the customer is happy, and the money still is not in your account. For a lot of contractors, getting paid is slower and more stressful than the actual job. It does not have to be. Most late payments are not customers refusing to pay — they are customers who were made to wait, forget, or jump through hoops. Fix that friction and the money shows up faster. Here are seven habits that work.

1. Invoice on site, before you leave

The single best moment to send an invoice is the second the work is done and the customer is standing there satisfied. Every hour you wait, that goodwill cools and the invoice slides down their to-do list. Build it on your phone and hand it over before you pack the truck.

2. Give them a way to pay by card

A mailed check is a week you will never get back — plus a trip to the bank. When a customer can tap a link and pay by card in under a minute, you often get paid on the spot. Card payments through EZ Invoices run on Stripe and deposit into your bank on its normal payout schedule.

3. Text the invoice, do not just email it

Emails sit unread in a folder for days. A texted payment link gets seen in seconds. Meet customers where they already look — their text messages — and the odds of same-day payment jump.

4. Set a clear, short due date

"Whenever" gets paid whenever. Put a real deadline on every invoice — "Due on receipt" or "Net 7" — so there is a specific day the money is expected. A clear due date paired with an easy way to pay removes every excuse for a late payment.

5. Take a deposit on bigger jobs

You should not be fronting hundreds in materials and waiting weeks to see any of it back. For larger jobs, split the invoice into stages — a deposit before you buy materials, a progress payment, and a final balance. Your customer pays each stage from the same link, so your cash flow keeps up with the work.

6. Make the invoice itself easy to say yes to

A confusing bill gets set aside "to look at later." List materials and labor as separate line items with clear quantities and prices, show the subtotal, tax, and total, and put your business name and contact info at the top. When a customer can see exactly what they are paying for, they pay without questions.

7. Let overdue invoices chase themselves

Following up on late payments is nobody’s favorite job, so it does not happen — and the invoice ages. The fix is a polite, automatic reminder on a schedule, so you stop being the bad guy about your own money. (Automatic payment reminders are in active development at EZ Invoices; today you can resend a payment link in a couple of taps.)

Put it together

None of these are complicated. Invoice on site, make it payable by card, text the link, set a real due date, and take deposits on the big stuff. EZ Invoices is built to do exactly that from your phone at the job site — build a trade-ready invoice, text a payment link, and get paid before you leave the driveway.
