Contractors ask the same question in every state: do I charge sales tax on labor, on materials, or on both? There is no single national answer. What you can do on every invoice is show tax clearly, use the rate you were told to use, and avoid burying it inside the labor price.
Show tax as its own line
If tax applies, the customer should see a subtotal, a tax amount, and a total. Hiding tax inside the line items makes the price look inflated and makes your own records harder to explain later. If tax does not apply to this job, do not invent a line. A zero tax line with no explanation is noise. A missing tax line, when you do owe tax, is a problem for you — not a discount for them.
Tax you collect is not income you keep. It is money you are holding to remit. Treat it that way in your head even if the invoice is simple. Do not spend the tax line like it is labor profit.
Do not guess because another contractor does it differently
The contractor across town may be billing a different kind of job, in a different city, under a different resale setup. Copying their invoice is not a tax position. If you are unsure, send the invoice without a made-up rate and ask someone who is allowed to answer — then update how you bill the next job. A wrong rate on one invoice is easier to fix than a year of wrong rates you never questioned.
Put the job location on the invoice
Where the work happened can matter. The customer's mailing address and the job site are not always the same, especially for property managers. Put the job address on the document so you, the customer, and your accountant are looking at the same place.
In EZ Invoices you can set a tax rate on the invoice and the total updates from the subtotal. The app does not decide whether you owe tax. That is still your call, with your accountant. The bill just needs to show the number you chose, separately, so the customer can see it.
